First Time Visitors
First time visitors to our services receive two gifts—a loaf of homemade bread and a Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) bulb. These gifts symbolize the “Bread of Life” and the “Light of the World.”
Earth Sabbath
Each spring we have Earth Sabbath on a Sunday near Earth Day (April 22). This year Earth Day was on a Sunday, and we celebrated Earth Sabbath on that day. The theme of all three services is Creation Care, and related displays are in the Commons Area.
Earth & Spirit Small Group
On Sunday morning we have the Earth and Spirit small group which meets at 11:00 AM in Room 210. The focus of this class is our charge to care for God’s Creation and how this fits into our spiritual life.
Energy & Water
Conserving energy and water and using it wisely and promoting the use of environmentally safe products are things we strive to do. In the last five years, a new more efficient cooling/heating system has been installed and bathrooms were updated to save water. Automatic light switches were installed, and we are a Dominion Green Power Partner using green power for part of our electricity.
Garden of Weedin’
Our Garden of Weedin’ was started in 2010. Produce is used at church and by organizations in the area that provide food to those in need. We believe it is important to add trees to the grounds that will add beauty and produce a product that can be used and shared by people. Four apple trees have been planted on our grounds in the last three years.
Landscaping Plan
We have comprehensive landscape plan to beautify our church’s grounds and to prevent water runoff in order to protect the Chesapeake Bay watershed. This will be a multi-year effort to take steps to maintain and beautify our grounds in a manner that cares for creation.
Reduce, Recycle, Reuse, Rejoice!
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rejoice! Recycling appropriate items and composting our kitchen waste are ways to reduce the amount of resources used and wasted.
